Spinal Manipulation

Spinal Manipulation or the Spinal Adjustment

Chiropractic is a healing art that focuses on maintaining the body’s structural alignment, specifically the structure and function of the spine.  Chiropractors employ a variety of manual techniques to help correct spinal alignment problems, movement problems and musculoskeletal related pain.  Spinal adjustments (manipulations) have been shown to help people of all ages who have neck pain, back pain and headaches. Chiropractors also provide instruction on proper diet, exercise and lifestyle modification.

What is the Spinal Adjustment or Spinal Manipulation?

The chiropractic adjustment is the keystone of the chiropractic profession.  During a spinal adjustment the chiropractor places their hands on one of the vertebrae of the spine and applies a carefully directed, quick thrust toward the spinal joints. This is done in order to correct the spinal misalignment or joint motion restriction that was found during an examination. When the adjustment or manipulation is done, it is usually accompanied by a “popping” sound from the joint and a sense of relief by the patient. The sound comes from the movement of the joint surfaces.  Spinal adjustments reduce pain, increase joint range of motion and reduce muscle spasm.

Are Chiropractic Adjustments Safe?

Chiropractic is a very safe form of treatment. Chiropractic treatment offers an effective alternative to pain medications, anti inflammatory medication or surgery.  Side effects from spinal manipulation have been reported as mild and temporary.
