Headache Treatment

Numerous studies have shown that chiropractic manipulation can be effective in the treatment of some types of headaches.

We have successfully treated many patients suffering from headaches.  There are different types of headaches, including muscle tension headaches, cervicogenic headaches and migraine headaches.

Muscle Tension Headaches

Muscle tension headaches are the most common type of headache accounting for about 75-80% of all types of headaches.  It feels like a tight band or pressure around the forehead or over the back of the head and neck. Tension headaches usually begin gradually and usually get worse as the day progresses.  It is estimated that about 80% of the US population suffers from occasional tension headaches. They are thought to be related to tight and painful muscles in the head and neck that develop with chronic poor posture, fatigue, overexertion, lack of sleep or even emotional stress.

Cervicogenic Headaches

Headaches that originate from the joints and muscles of the neck are called cervicogenic headaches. This is a type of referred pain from the neck to the head.  Cervicogenic headaches are thought to be caused by repeated or abnormal neck movement, a sustained awkward head position or poor sleeping posture. The symptoms include neck pain, shoulder pain and pain that usually radiates to one side of the head.

Migraine Headaches

Migraine headaches are a common type of headache.  They occur more frequently in women than men. The mechanisms of migraine headaches are not fully understood, but they are thought to be associated with dilation and contraction of the blood vessels in the brain.  Migraine headaches are characterized by severe pain on one side of the head, a preceding visual disturbance and sometimes nausea or vomiting. Migraine pain is often described as a throbbing type of pain. Frequently, sensitivity to light may also occur with a migraine headache.  Some foods like aged meats and cheeses and some food additives can trigger a migraine headache.
