Sciatica Herniated Disc Treatment
Sciatica is a condition that is usually caused by a lumbar disc pressing against the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is a large nerve that emerges from the lumbar spine (the lower spinal bones) and courses down the buttocks, back of the thigh, calf and into the foot. The lumbar disc is the thick ligament between the vertebrae in the spine. In addition to holding the vertebrae together, the discs also act like shock absorbers. Sometimes the disc begins to lose its normal shape and presses on the sciatic nerve causing pain in the back, thigh, lower leg or foot. An excellent discussion of sciatica can be found here.
Our primary treatment for sciatica is the use of Cox flexion distraction chiropractic technique. This is a gentle tractioning or stretching movement that is performed on the low back. This tractioning of the disc reduces pain by reducing the pressure on the sciatic nerve. Many patients get relief in a few days or weeks from this treatment while others take longer.
